The Royal Observer Corps, would be used to monitor the effects of a nuclear explosion to record the wind direction, power of the weapon and if the ROC monitors survived the aftermath, to report the damage inflicted; although in truth the job was recognized as a suicide mission.

The white building is currently being used as The Bay Museum & Research Centre: but historically like so many defence type buildings of this period it could be viewed by some as being rather sinister in nature! Classified as a UK Admiralty Secret site, the equipment it contained and the technology that it had is still. classified as UK SECRET even to this day.

The Canvey Community Archive group was formed in 2006 in partnership with Essex County Council Libraries, The Essex Record Office, East of England Museums, and the Libraries and Archives Council. It is run by the people of Canvey. The Community Archive takes the form of an internet site, so that its content is available from home computers and the People's Network in Libraries around the county. The Community Archive gathers memories, photographs and other documents that relate to the history of the Island. Canvey residents are being asked to share their memories and photographs of life on the island.

No new posts Southern Pillbox

This pillbox is on the Benfleet southern shores and faces Canvey Island, built to defend the mainland from a Canvey taken over by the Germans, who were inevitable in the early Second World War. Built in 1940 or 1941, it has five sides and four loop holes for a Bren light machine gun or Short Magazine Lee Enfield rifle, designed for the Home Guard to man in case of a Nazi attack on Britain, whose intentions would probably have been to take London via the Thames.

Colchester's distinctive heritage is nowhere more apparent than in Castle Park. A site of national importance, this Victorian Park contains evidence of 2000 years of history and is a landscape moulded by the people of Colchester over many eras. It not only encompasses much of Colchester's rich heritage within its boundaries but is much loved and used as a part of present day life. It boasts over 1 million visitors a year. Providing a green oasis in the town centre, you can sit, walk, enjoy music, play games, or picnic amongst wonderful flowers and trees.
Its horticulture is award-winning and the park has long been a superb venue for the town's big events.

Whilst Shell shut down after long service a few decades ago, Coryton is still in use, all though up for sale, and marks the landscape of even places as far as Southend, being spotted from miles away. Replacing a historic village in 1970, the refinery is still a landmark in its own right.

Still close to its original form, restoration and maintenance is being undertaken by The Coalhouse Fort Project and since 1983 this volunteer group and registered charity are responsible for opening this wonder to the public every year. Their main objectives are ‘to preserve, restore and maintain Coalhouse Fort for the benefit of the public and to advance the education of the public - similar to BTP.
